Created in 2007, the European Research Council (ERC) is part of the European Union's Framework Program for Research and Innovation and is currently presided by the French mathematician Jean-Pierre Bourguignon. The ERC supports investigator-driven frontier research projects across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence.
• Starting Grant, up to €2.5 million, for young researchers, two to seven years after their PhD thesis, who wish to establish their own research group
• Consolidator Grant, a grant of up to €3 million, for researchers, seven to twelve years after their PhD thesis, who need to consolidate their independence and their research group
• Advanced Grant, amounting up to €3.5 million, for well-established researchers developing a radically new research project
• Proof of Concept, an additional funding of €150,000 dedicated to ERC Starting, Consolidator or Advanced grant laureates, to support the exploitation of the scientific findings stemming out of their ERC project
